Janelle Monáe’s much-anticipated horror film, Antebellum, fell victim to the pandemic induced Hollywood halt. The film’s debut was re-scheduled from April 24th to August 21st. Lionsgate studio released an updated poster and trailer for the film on
Wednesday.
Antebellum is the first feature-length film for both Gerard Bush and
Christopher Renz. The film was inspired by a nightmare Bush dreamt after
the death of his father. In it, Bush thought his ancestors were sitting at
the foot of his bed. He poured the emotions he experienced from his
unsettling vision into the main character of the film. He stated, “I felt
like the woman in the nightmare was so desperate for help that she was
screaming through multiple dimensions and that this could exist in a
different space and time. And then we built out the story.”

Janelle Monáe portrays successful author Veronica Henley who is trapped
in a nightmarish reality from which she must escape. She has previously
described this role as one of her most complex to date. She stated, “I
had to do some real meditation and prayer. I had to work out a lot. I
had to get my head in the mental space to go through Veronica’s
journey.” Gabourey Sidibe, Kiersey Clemons, Jena Malone, Rob Aramayo,
Lily Cowles, Eric Lange, Jack Huston, Marque Richardson II, and Tongayi Chirisa also star in the film.
Both Bush and Renz have developed a reputation for socially conscious
work, including a PSA for Harry Belafonte’s social justice non-profit,
Sankofa. Sean McKittrick (Us, Get Out) also produced Antebellum,
underscoring the possibility of a socially relevant thriller in Southern Gothic style.
