It has been twelve years since the last Twilight book, Breaking Dawn, was released. Monday, best-selling author Stephenie Meyer announced that she will be continuing the vampire love story with a brand new companion novel, Midnight Sun. It is slated to release on August 4, 2020. The book will be a retelling of the Twilight origin story, but this time from the sparkly perspective of Edward Cullen.
“As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life,” publisher Little, Brown and Company writes in its synopsis, “How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?”Back in 2008, a 12-chapter section of the book leaked online which caused Meyer to shelf the project. However, as we all know the internet never sleeps and 'Twi-hards' have been clambering for its release ever since, just hoping one day it would be a reality. Luckily Meyer had given us a taste of what was to come in a now-deleted post of the book on her website.
In a video she did for Good Morning America she said:
“It’s a crazy time right now and I wasn’t sure it was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for just so so long it didn’t seem right to make you wait any more.”
Fans all around the globe took to Twitter to share their support for the author and show their thirst for another installment of The Twilight Saga.
Say what you will about Twilight, but being able to release the same book from a different protagonist's POV FIFTEEN years after the original book came out AND have it trend on Twitter is straight baller.— Justina Ireland (@justinaireland) May 4, 2020
Some fans quickly pointing out the comparison between Edward's death in the book being caused by the Spanish Flu in 1918, before he was adopted by his vampire-dad Carlisle Cullen, and our current global situation.
Fans are hoping that there might be some hope though. There is currently a movement on Twitter to have him voice the audio version of this book. Which honestly, would be amazing.
