The Mandalorian, the first ever live-action Star Wars TV series, has generally received positive reception from fans and critics ever since it premiered on the Disney+ launch date. Within just a short eight-episode season, it managed to find its footing very quickly, captivating audiences with its new characters and the changes that they underwent. Understandably, fans are eagerly waiting to see what will happen next in the upcoming second season. At the moment, it appears that people are not done praising the show.
During the Emmy Award nominations, we found out that The Mandalorian got nominated for a total of 15 categories. If you are a smuggler like Han Solo, then you might usually say, “Never tell me the odds.” However, with these many nominations, there is a probable chance that the series will win in at least one of the categories. For those curious, the list of categories and for which The Mandalorian was nominated is as follows:
Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance (Taika Waititi, “Chapter 8: Redemption”)
Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (“Chapter 1: The Mandalorian”)
Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (“Chapter 7: The Reckoning”)
Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes (“Chapter 3: The Sin”)

Outstanding Special Visual Effects (“Chapter 2: The Child”)
Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series
In terms of the actors of the series, it looks like Taika Waititi and Giancarlo Esposito are the two who are being recognized via these nominations.
Waititi’s vocal performance as IG-11 was very entertaining and fitting for the robotic character, who was shown to be capable of having a heart in the season finale titled “The Redemption.” This episode was actually directed by Waititi himself, and he was announced earlier this year to be helming a future Star Wars film. Given the acclaim that he has gotten from his directing and vocal performance on The Mandalorian, lots of fans are excited to see what else he may bring to the franchise.
Also within “The Redemption,” Giancarlo Esposito was able to show off how menacing he could be as the mysterious Moff Gideon, giving orders and revealing to the hero characters that he knows more about them than they had expected. Given the last shot we see of him in the finale, there is no doubt that we are in for more of Gideon’s intimidating performance. We may even get more details about his past, which fans have been wondering about for quite a while. Even through a character outside of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Esposito can show just how threatening of a villain he can be.
The ceremony for the 72nd Primtime Emmy Awards is set to take place on September 20, 2020. Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it will be held virtually from the homes of actors. As such, it will certainly feel very different compared to previous years, but viewers will still be able to see the reactions of the actors when the award winners are announced. In the meantime, perhaps these nominations may compel those unfamiliar with The Mandalorian to watch the show and see about all the buzz.
