Star Wars fans may
have something to look forward to while waiting for the next season of The
Mandalorian to drop in October. Following the conclusion of The Clone Wars in May, fans have been assured that a new
show will fill the void. Star Wars television has announced a new animated
series titled The Bad Batch, focusing on the clone trooper squad of the same name.
On the live-action front, two new series will
focus on Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi, respectively. Disney has had both of series
in development for quite some time. Much of the work was put on hold during the lockdown.
Now that production is slowly ramping up again, the two new shows are gearing
up for release. Their dates may even overlap one another.
Facts and Conjecture
The Obi-Wan
series went through several shakeups early on in production. Joby Harold was
brought on board to rewrite the show. Deborah Chow of The Mandalorian fame remains attached to direct. A video from Kessel Run Transmissions speculates that
the Obi-Wan show will feature flashbacks to the Clone Wars. This may no
longer be the case if Harold’s rewrites upend planned storylines.
However, the tantalizing
dream that both McGregor and Christensen may appear together in a new Clone
Wars era show may still come true. The Direct also reports that Hayden
Christensen may reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker in the Obi-Wan show. This possibility is, of course, accompanied by rumors that a suited Darth
Vader may appear. Rounding out the supposed
appearances are those of Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka. She has been reported to appear in the new season
of The Mandalorian. Therefore, it is not outside the realm of possibility that
the character may make an appearance in other live-action series within the franchise.
Story Timeline
The Bad Batch
The first show that was announced to fill the Disney+ release gap between the end of The Clone Wars and the next seasons of The Mandalorian is The Bad Batch. As the name suggests, the main stars of the show are the experimental clone unit also known as Clone Force 99. The story follows them in the immediate aftermath of the Clone Wars.
After the events of Revenge of the Sith, Bad Batch members Hunter, Wrecker, Tech, Crosshair, and Echo will be going on mercenary missions while trying to find a new purpose. It is not known how Order 66 truly impacted the Bad Batch since they were not attached to a specific Jedi General, as far as we know. Viewers may recall that this batch consists of experimental units. They may never have had inhibitor chips at all, though newer member Echo surely did. Rather than being Imperial Commandos, the Bad Batch are men trying to make their way across the galaxy. Kessel Run Transmissions has also emphasized that Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex will appear on The Bad Batch in a limited fashion. It is unclear how both characters will be impacted by Order 66.
Ahsoka would more than likely be in the same clothing that she wore during the Siege of Mandalore but would no longer have her blue lightsabers. Captain Rex will have a major role attempting to save his brothers from the influence of Darth Sidious. He may also be on a mission to remove as many inhibitor chips as possible. As we see in Rebels, he eventually settles down with Wolffe and Gregor on Seelos.
The potential for cross-media synergy is there. For now, we will just have to wait and see what direction the Obi-Wan show ends up taking.
