Wonderstorm Animated Series 'The Dragon Prince' Renewed for Four More Seasons

Fans of the Wonderstorm-produced The Dragon Prince, an animated fantasy series, have gotten their wish and more. The series made its debut on Netflix in September 2018 and has gained a loyal following, with some perceiving it as a spiritual successor to the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender. Even setting aside the fact that it was co-created by Avatar: The Last Airbender head writer and executive producer Aaron Ehasz, as well as the fact that Sokka voice actor Jack DeSena voices Callum here, The Dragon Prince has a similar type of humor that complements the fleshed-out world that it inhabits.

Without spoiling anything, the show is set on the magical continent of Xadia, during a conflict between humans and elves. Following the death of a dragon king, the egg containing the titular dragon prince is discovered. To bring peace to Xadia, two half-brother human princes named Callum (age 14) and Ezran (age 10) form an unlikely alliance with Moonshadow elf assassin Rayla (age 15). Together, they go on a quest to return the egg in order to bring peace to the warring peoples. Along the way, the relationships evolve, and there end up being some gray areas pertaining to the morality of certain characters.

While the third season resolved some threads, there was still clearly room for more to tell. Since November 2019, fans have been waiting for an answer about whether or not the show would be coming back. Some, understandably, were worried that the show had perhaps been canceled. The Dragon Prince does not seem to be as popular as other shows that have usually been guaranteed renewals.

During a Comic-Con @ Home virtual panel on Friday, July 24, the show’s creators and cast members got together on Zoom and took part in a Q&A session. Toward the end of the panel, DeSena relayed a question that many outlets and fans had been asking, which was whether or not there would be a fourth season of The Dragon Prince. Ehasz answered provided the following response: “I think it’s really important to emphasize… Yes. We have been picked up for a season four. Netflix has picked up he whole saga of The Dragon Prince.” The resulting reactions from the cast members, who were unaware about the latter bit, were priceless. According to Ehasz, the fans who politely asked Netflix to renew the show had their voices heard.

While the announcement of a fourth season would have been enough to keep fans from worrying for now, they would have eventually endured the same cycle of wondering whether or not there would be another season. Now, they can rest easily, knowing that Netflix has assured everyone that the entire story will get to be told. With the guarantee of seasons four, five, six, and seven, the team behind The Dragon Prince and map out (or perhaps have already mapped out) exactly how they want to tell the rest of the story, and then bring that vision to life.

At the moment, there is no word on the release date for the fourth season of The Dragon Prince. While we do not have a concrete date to mark on our calendars, it is still reassuring to know that it will indeed be coming. To those who have not gotten themselves familiar with the series, there is still time. Each season consists of nine episodes that are usually no longer than 27 minutes, with the season 3 finale being an exception as it clocks in at 33 minutes. At these lengths, the episodes are easily digestible. The animation for the first season may not feel very fluid, but it does improve after that. The journey (or, rather, the parts of it that are available so far) can be very rewarding for the viewer.
