If you have never heard of Unreal Engine before, you are not alone.
However, it is quite possible that you have seen or experienced Unreal Engine without
realizing it at one point or another. Unreal Engine is the world’s most open
and advanced real-time 3D creation tool used for gaming, architecture,
automotive and transportation design, film and television, training and
simulation, and various other applications. Developed by Epic Games in 1998, Unreal
Engine initially emerged onto the gaming scene in the first-person shooter
game, Unreal. Though it was originally developed with first-person
shooter games in mind, it has been utilized in other gaming genres as well. Unreal
Engine is a program written in C++ that allows optimum manageability and compatibility
over several different platforms. Just like everything else in the technological
world, it has continuously evolved since its debut over twenty years ago. Unreal
Engine 4 dropped in 2014, and it features a comprehensive collection of creation
tools that offers creators of various industries the freedom and control to distribute
leading-edge content, interactive experiences, and immersive virtual worlds.
Unreal Engine 4 is a well-known program among game
development enthusiasts and requires minimal coding capabilities. The interface
is quite simple, and by using the Blueprints Visual Scripting System, it is
possible to develop a game prototype without the need to input code. However, some
users believe the Blueprints Visual Scripting System hinders their creativity
because its capabilities are limited. The Blueprints Visual Scripting System is
ideal for smaller tasks and prototyping but lacks strength when it comes to
accomplishing larger tasks and optimization. A general working knowledge of C++
is highly recommended to develop a truly unique gaming experience with Ultimate
Engine 4.
The force of passionate creativity
and imagination has always been strong with Star Wars fans. Just recently,
an unofficial yet noteworthy Star Wars fan project, using Unreal Engine 4, has been
released to the public. Jorge Barros developed a tech demo that recreates the
Droid Control Ship seen in the beginning of Episode I - The Phantom Menacethat lets users explore the depths of this Trade Federation vehicular domain.
In September, Barros revealed a gameplay demo video of his project on his YouTube
Channel with a caption that stated:
"This is a playable real-time environment recreated in Unreal Engine 4 after the first scenes in Episode I, inside the Trade Federation's Droid Control Ship. Everything was made by me apart from all sound used in the videos - no copyright infringement intended."
Many of Barros’ followers shared in the excitement of his project
and were curious to know more about his plans. Barros seemed uncertain of the
demo’s release, due to the limited capabilities within the Blueprints Visual Scripting
System of Unreal Engine 4. Thankfully, he managed to overcome the creative obstacles
which allowed him to eagerly share his extensive accomplishment with the world.
Though he admitted that some aspects had unintentionally been overlooked, he
successfully managed to incorporate many unique detailed features that undoubtedly
took much time and effort on his part. The demo had originally been available to
download on Dropbox, but due the extensive amount of traffic generated by the
high-demand for the download, he had to find an alternative website to offer
the file. If you are interested in checking out this playable
Droid Ship Demo, you can download it here.
