One of the most famous and beloved characters in all of Star Wars is the menacing bounty hunter Boba Fett, first shown in the Star Wars Holiday Special and then in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. We got to see him as a kid in one of the prequel films, Attack of the Clones, which was all kinds of fun, and there were even spinoff books and other stories just like literally every single character that ever appeared in the original Star Wars films. Despite the fact that Boba only had a few lines in the original films (one of which was "Aaaugh!" as he was clumsily knocked into the sarlacc pit), the look alone gained him a sizable following.
Well, with everything else getting a spinoff, Boba Fett is getting one as well. Boba has been an important character in the last few episodes of the second season of The Mandalorian, where he played a much bigger role than he did in any of the movies. Fans actually got to see him do cool stuff that would justify their love for him. Rumors abounded that he would get a show of his own.
We now know that this is the case.
Spoilers ahead. If you haven't seen the finale of season two, do that before continuing.
In a post-credits scene in the season two finale of The Mandalorian, we see Jabba's palace on Tatooine for the first time since Return of the Jedi and find out that Jabba's right hand man, the Twi'lek Bib Fortuna, has taken control of the Hutt's operations. In fact, he seems to have taken Jabba's lifestyle as well, as he has grown fat and he has a dancing slave girl chained to his throne.
Suddenly, we hear blaster fire, and everybody in the throne room is gunned down by Fennec Shand, another character we've seen a few times in the series. Boba Fett then calmly comes down the stairs and approaches Bib, who tries to play it off with a "Boba! I thought you were dead!" before Fett casually shoots him. The final shot of the second season is Boba Fett on the throne, with the idea that he now controls the criminal empire.
The idea of Fett controlling a criminal empire, especially one as vast as Jabba's, is interesting. We already know he's ruthless and cunning, perfect traits for a leader of the underworld to have. Plus, he is unlikely to fall into the lifestyle of Jabba and Bib by taking slave girls and eating himself to the point where he can't fit into his iconic armor. He seems more like the kind of boss that wouldn't accept failure of any kind, and would run the organization with clockwork efficiency. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a while before we get to see what kind of leader he is.
After the screen fades to black, it is revealed that Boba's story will be told in The Book of Boba Fett, which is dropping in December of 2021, meaning we (as of the time of this article) have a year to speculate about everything. However, like every piece of media, it is unknown if that release date will be pushed back as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully not. The cliffhanger at the end of The Mandalorian definitely left fans wanting more.
It's also likely to be a miniseries, or at most it will have two seasons. With so many other projects to work on, Disney doesn't have the schedule space for more than about two seasons of the show, and that's probably for the best. A contained story would benefit the show. It will come along, tell its story, and end.
Overall, there is a lot to look forward to with the new Boba Fett series. If nothing else, Star Wars fans can finally get some justification as to why they love the galaxy's most feared bounty hunter.
