The Cassian Andor Show Is Now Filming In London, Says Diego Luna

Disney has been hard at work since launching Disney+ a year ago. They finally have a platform where they can release shows to go along with major blockbusters such as the Marvel and Star Wars film series. And they have wasted no time in getting those shows planned, filmed, and out on their streaming service. Even though COVID-19 has slowed production on many of their shows, with restrictions lifting some, they have been able to slowly get back on track with producing their highly anticipated series.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe side of things seems to have more series in production, Star Wars is slowly catching up. Currently, the only new series that is in the Star Wars franchise on Disney+ is The Mandalorian. Fans have loved this addition to the Star Wars universe, especially with the season that is currently coming out weekly on Disney+. And the fans are clamoring for more.

One of the rumored series that Disney/Lucasfilm has been working on is one which focuses on Cassian Andor. Played by Diego Luna, Cassian Andor was a central character in Rogue One, which was released in theaters back in December of 2016. Cassian Andor was one of the most fascinating characters in Rogue One, and many of the fans were curious about his backstory and motivations, especially in the Rebellion. He was a spy and an assassin who was very unhappy with some of the things he had to do in the name of freedom and overthrowing the Empire. He was very much a tortured character that made many wish for more of his story.

And now, Disney and Lucasfilm are officially giving us one.

In a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Diego Luna confirmed that there was going to be a Cassian Andor series. They are currently in London filming the series. This show is going to be a prequel to the events of Rogue One, but not a sequel to Episodes I, II, and III. We will have to wait and see exactly what this means and how this show exactly fits in with the timeline and events set between the Empire taking over and the Rebellion eventually overthrowing them in Episode VI

Diego Luna went on to say that the series is “everything you need to understand Rogue One,” specifically in relation to Cassian Andor. This means that we may finally get the answers we need to understand this complex character. Since this is a series and not a two and a half hour movie, they are able to flesh out the story and the character more and explore the inner workings of this story and character arc. Luna said that it was fun to be a part of a story that “wasn’t about getting to the end, but in fact delaying that,” meaning that, since you don’t have a short timeframe in which to introduce a complex character and throw together a character arc, you are able to really focus on showing more development and back story. It isn’t a rushed story. You don’t want the end to come too soon. It is not clear how soon the series ties into the events of Rogue One and where exactly it may be in the timeline of events.

The fact that we finally have confirmation of the show filming is great news. As with other Star Wars productions, there have been some ups and downs on the way to production. Tony Gilroy, who oversaw reshoots on Rogue One, handed off directing duties for the Cassian Andor show to Toby Haynes earlier this year. Tony Gilroy is still the showrunner of the production, however. With the lockdowns and restrictions due to COVID-19, it was unclear whether the show would be able to shoot in 2020 at all. So it is great news to hear that it is able to really start on production in London despite there still being some restrictions.

While the Cassian Andor series is still unnamed as of yet, it is exciting to note that it will be bringing back some of the central characters of Rogue One. Alan Tudyk, who plays K-2SO, will reprise his role, and so will Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma. There will also be a number of new faces, including Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgard, and Kyle Soller, whose characters we do not know yet.

This show promises to be an exciting new adventure in the Star Wars saga, and hopefully we will hear more about it soon!
